Buccaneering electronic-disco duo Heartbreak are flamboyant, charismatic Argentinian frontman Sebastian Muravchix and half-British, half-French keyboard mastermind Ali Renault. Dubbed "metallo", the pair's unique style combines the futurist-yet-retro sound of Italo-disco - the often overlooked but hugely influential European counterpart to New York disco - with the dark, brooding energy of metal. Together Heartbreak have helped kick start a renaissance in electronic pop, Italo and synth-led sounds thanks to their widely acclaimed debut album, Lies, and phenomenal live shows. Their quest continues with the forthcoming Deceit EP, a UK tour and a raft of production and remix output.
Heartbreak's seven-song strong Deceit EP features three fresh mixes by notable peers. One of the biggest underground tracks of last year, We're Back gets a rare and blistering dancefloor remix by reclusive Frenchman Vitalic and also undergoes a heafty synth makeover by Gothenburg duo Romantix, while London's Allez- Allez perform sonic surgery on Soul Transplant turning it in to a raw analogue burner that's already the toast of the blogs. The remixes are augmented by a trio of new songs: live favorite and bucking, Bobby O-styled monster My Tears Electro, wildcat synth anthem Destroy All Power and colder-than-ice instrumental Get The Drive. The EP closes with a galloping, Spagehetti Western cover of Heartbreak's own Deadly Love.
In addition to their own output and ongoing live crusade, Heartbreak are increasingly making a name for themselves as an in-demand production team. Recent remixes and studio work for La Roux, Saint Etienne Little Boots, Mirwais, The Presets, Tommy Sparks, and Simian Mobile Disco - all devout Heartbreak fans - have showcased the duo's considerable production skills. Look out for further Heartbreak remixes over the coming months.
